Encounters in the Torres Strait: Conflict, Culture, and Change

  • 2 Steps

About

This course delves into the eye-opening, and sometimes perilous, early encounters between European pioneers and the diverse tribes of the Torres Strait Islands. Explore the intense and often violent clashes, including the practice of headhunting, which saw human heads traded for war boats with the Timorese. Discover the dynamics of inter-tribal conflicts, as well as those involving mainland Aborigines. Through a unique lens, we’ll also examine the trade of valuable goods like axes in exchange for white captives, alongside the later transformative impact of Christianity on the region. Finally, we’ll take a closer look at the recent political developments involving Torres Strait Islanders and their evolving role in broader societal agendas. IN DEVELOPMENT: COURSE OVERVIEW ONLY
