About

This course challenges the prevailing narratives surrounding the Great Barrier Reef, focusing on the recent data showing record-high coral cover and the questionable science that has falsely claimed the reef is in peril. Led by Professor Peter Ridd, a distinguished physicist and marine science specialist with over 40 years of experience studying the reef, the course provides a critical perspective on the ecological health of one of the world’s most iconic natural wonders. Students will explore the dynamic nature of the Great Barrier Reef, learning how natural flux is an essential part of its ecosystem. Professor Ridd’s expertise, combined with his courageous stand against institutional misinformation—culminating in a High Court victory—provides a rare insight into the problems of trustworthiness within the scientific community. The course is structured into four stages: 1. Is the Great Barrier Reef Doomed?: Understanding the ecology and resilience of the reef. 2. 50 Years of Doom Science: A deep dive into the history of scientific claims predicting the reef’s destruction. 3. Coral Bleaching and Climate Narratives: Examining the real science behind coral bleaching and debunking false climate change narratives. 4. Quality Assurance in Science: Addressing issues of credibility and transparency within scientific institutions. This course will empower students to critically assess scientific claims, explore the intersection of science and policy, and understand the true state of the Great Barrier Reef as a resilient and thriving ecosystem.
